I've found this to be completely true. For managers, read this and absorb it. It's interesting to speculate as to the reason why the difference between working men and working women in regard to careers demanding long hours, but I'm not sure those reasons really have an effect on the people actually down in the trenches. Remember that there's a huge difference between acute stress and chronic stress and it's effect on your health, happiness, and personal life. Acute stressors tend to make people stronger (like lifting weight to failure, for example), but chronic stressors are all bad bad bad. They just don't negatively impact your life. They will kill you.
